To love is like playing the piano.

What exactly is joy? The dictionary defines it as “the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying”.But what does that even mean? Well, I know that joy is not happiness. They are two different things. Happiness is when you pass a test you could have sworn you failed, or when you get a new puppy, or when things are just going well in your life. I tend to think of joy as a perfectly toasted marshmallow. You find that one spot in the fire and you keep the marshmallow there for a while. The inside gets gooey and the outside turns crisp and light brown from the heat of the fire. And suddenly, it’s fantastic. I think life is kind of like that. You get stuck in the middle of one of life’s fires, but you stay there, and you endure it. Because of the heat, your heart is softened, like the gooey middle of the marshmallow, and you become better. You’re no longer a plain, white marshmallow. Sure, marshmallow’s are okay uncooked. But after some toasting, they are delicious.
Or maybe joy is more like a hot summer’s day. You’re out in the sun and you are almost at your boiling point. But fortunately, God places you near a pool, or a lake, or a stream. And although you can’t dive in, you can dip your feet into the cool water. Maybe you even splash some on your face. And the only word to describe the feeling is rejuvenation. Sometimes the heat of life gets to you. And yeah, it’s hard to get through it. But in the end, it makes refreshment and rejuvenation a million times more meaningful.
